Australian Labradoodles are intelligent dogs and training is essential. The
effort you put in during their early months will pay dividends for the rest of
their lives. Puppies need stimulation, training and consistent ground rules - it’s
much like raising a child! This approach will help avoid dogs who become
destructive or develop separation anxiety, due to boredom or confusion of
what’s acceptable behvaiour. We strongly recommend teaching your pup to
become used to being alone for short periods right from the time you bring
them home. I encourage new puppy families to have a read of this book:
How to Train Your Dog – the complete guide to raising a confident and happy
dog from puppy to adult Jen and Ryan Tate (2021). This is one of the best and
most straightforward dog training books I have read. Highly recommended. It
is worth following their Facebook page too for lots of useful tips: TATE Animal
Training Enterprises.
We also recommend a good puppy school starting from 10 -12 weeks old. This
is mostly about socialisation, and very important. From about 5 months, some
more formal obedience training is advised. Labradoodles are very social and
need to meet people and other dogs in a positive setting
regularly. Labradoodles generally love water and balls. They can be
easily taught to retrieve a ball and bring it back to you. We recommend lots of
walking, trips to the beach, cafes and kids sporting events. Wherever you go
for outdoor leisure activities, take your labradoodle with you if possible. They
will really enjoy participating in your family life.
We look for people who can commit to spending quality time with their dog,
including training, grooming and exercise. If you do not have the time for this,
then an Australian Labradoodle is not the dog for you.
Fleece and wool coat labradoodles will not lose hair on your furniture or
clothes. However all labradoodles shed a little, and this will remain trapped
within their coats and form knots or matts if not removed. This is why it is very
important to brush and comb them regularly, and why you will see a small
amount of dead hair in the brush when you do so.
Clipping is required, usually every 8 to 12 weeks. Clairevale Puppy Care Notes (provided to puppy
purchasers) contain much more detailed information about grooming and hygiene.
